They are hard to find, even in Japan, and make a great addition to any Pioneer collection. I sold my SPEC collection recently so it's time to pass these units on to other collectors. It now runs a modest bookshelf system in the guest room and doesn't need a crossover, much less two. I have too much equipment and the Series 20 system has been downsized. as transparent as the D-23 with somewhat less versatility (12 db/octave slope and only two or three way). It worked amazingly well! I can't imagine why Pioneer didn't sell these units All I can tell you is that they work beautifully. I originally planned to create a three way Series 20 System and these units were actually tested in that configuration. I have two of these units because it's pretty easy to take a two way STEREO electronic crossover and cable it to be a three way MONO crossover. Otherwise, the knobs and the texture of the font panel clearly show the influence of the SPEC series (actually known in Japan as the "70 Series"). Internally, the D-70 is similar in construction to the D-23 (only simplified) and they share the clear plastic marker surrounding the level controls. The D-23 was always part of the Series 20 line of components and never really matched the look of the SPEC series even though it fit nicely in the JA-R101 Rack Adapter. I brought two of them from Japan and then noticed that even though they were the same panel size as the C-21 or the U-24, the knobs and the overall design were more like the SPEC series! The SF-850 (the usual model associated with the SPEC series) was actually part of a compact multi-amp "850 Series" never exported to America (consisting of the SC-850 preamplifier, the SF-850 crossover and three of the SM-850 amplifiers). using the M-22 Class A amp for the highs and the M-25 Class A-B amp for the bass would make a great system. Pioneer D-70 Electronic Crossover (2 of 2)The ACTUAL matching crossover for the SPEC series! When I first saw these, I thought they were the baby brother of the legendary four way D-23 Electronic Crossover and intended as an alternative if you only needed a two way crossover for your Series 20 system.
